New M8 is open – what you need to know

The new M8 was opened to westbound traffic on Sunday 23 April and eastbound traffic on Sunday 30 April.

The new road layout features heavily revised junctions which mean both local and national journeys have changed.

This has the biggest effect on people using the Bargeddie, Shawhead, Carnbroe and Eurocentral junctions.

As a result, road users are being urged to familiarise themselves with the permanent route maps (see links below) which profile typical journeys eastbound and westbound along the A8/M8 corridor.

• Journeys from Glasgow
• Journeys from Edinburgh
• Journeys from M73 east

Access to/from the new M8 westbound carriageway will be available via the following junctions:

• M8 westbound on-slip at Chapelhall Junction
• M8 westbound on-slip at Eurocentral Junction
• M8 westbound link road to A725 southbound at Shawhead Junction
• M8 westbound off-slip to Baillieston roundabout at Baillieston Junction 8

Local road users should note that whilst access to all routes to and from the A8 will be maintained, new routes for traffic to Coatbridge, Airdrie, Bargeddie and Bellshill will be in place as follows:

Edinburgh (M8) to Eurocentral

• Via M8 westbound and join A8 westbound all-purpose road at Newhouse Junction 6, continue A8 westbound all-purpose road to Chapellhall south roundabout, take second exit and continue on the A8 westbound all-purpose road to  Eurocentral Junction.
• Return journey via: A8 eastbound all-purpose road to Chapelhall Junction 6A, take the second exit and continue east on the A8 eastbound all-purpose road to join the M8 motorway.

Edinburgh (M8) to A725 South (Bellshill)

• Via M8 westbound, M8 westbound link road to A725 southbound and continue south.
• Return journey via: A725 northbound to Shawhead Junction, M8 eastbound link road to the M8 motorway.

Edinburgh (M8) to A725 North (Coatbridge)

• Via M8 westbound and join A8 westbound all-purpose road at Newhouse Junction 6, continue A8 westbound all-purpose road to Chapellhall south roundabout, take second exit A8 westbound all-purpose road to Eurocentral Junction, take third exit and continue A8 westbound to Shawhead junction off-slip.
• Return journey via: A8 all-purpose road eastbound on-slip at Shawhead junction, continue A8 all-purpose road to join M8 eastbound at Newhouse Junction 6.

Edinburgh (M8) to Carnbroe

• Via M8 westbound and join A8 westbound all-purpose road at Newhouse Junction 6, continue A8 westbound all-purpose road to Chapellhall south roundabout, take second exit A8 westbound all-purpose road to  Eurocentral Junction, take third exit onto A8 westbound to Shawhead junction off-slip, A8 all-purpose road eastbound Shawhead Junction on-slip and continue A8 all-purpose road eastbound to Carnbroe Road off-slip.
• Return Journey via: A8 eastbound all-purpose road to join M8 eastbound at Newhouse Junction 6.

Edinburgh (M8) to A752 Bargeddie Junction (Showcase)

• Via M8 westbound and join A8 westbound all-purpose road at Newhouse Junction 6, continue A8 westbound all-purpose road to Chapellhall south roundabout, take second exit A8 westbound all-purpose road to  Eurocentral Junction, take third exit and continue A8 westbound to A752 Bargeddie Junction off-slip.
• Return Journey via: A8 eastbound all-purpose road A752 Bargeddie Junction on-slip, continue A8 all-purpose road to join M8 eastbound at Newhouse Junction 6.
   

Access to/from the new M8 eastbound carriageway will be available via the following junctions:

• M8 eastbound on-slip from Baillieston roundabout at Baillieston Junction 8.
• M8 eastbound link road from A725 northbound at Shawhead Junction.
• M8 eastbound off-slip at Eurocentral Junction
• M8 eastbound off-slip at Chapelhall Junction
• M8 eastbound on-slip at Newhouse Junction 6.

• Via M8 eastbound off-slip Baillieston Junction 8 to the A89 Bargeddie Roundabout, second exit onto A8 all-purpose road eastbound to Bargeddie Junction off-slip.
• Return journey via: A8 all-purpose road westbound Bargeddie Junction on-slip, continue A8 all-purpose road westbound to A89 Bargeddie Roundabout, take first exit to join M8 westbound.

Glasgow (M8) to A725 South (Bellshill)

• Via M8 eastbound off-slip Baillieston Junction 8 to the A89 Bargeddie Roundabout, second exit onto A8 all-purpose road eastbound to Shawhead Junction off-slip to A725 southbound and continue south.
• Return journey via: A725 northbound to Shawhead Junction, A8 all-purpose road westbound on-slip and continue A8 all-purpose road westbound to A89 Bargeddie Roundabout, take first exit to join M8 westbound.

Glasgow (M8) to A725 North (Coatbridge)

• Via M8 eastbound off-slip Baillieston Junction 8 to the A89 Bargeddie Roundabout, second exit onto A8 all-purpose road eastbound to Shawhead Junction off-slip to A725 northbound and continue A725 northbound via Whifflet Street.
• Return journey via: A725 southbound to Shawhead Junction, A8 all-purpose road westbound on-slip and continue A8 all-purpose road westbound to A89 Bargeddie Roundabout and join M8 westbound.

Glasgow (M8) to Carnbroe

• Via M8 eastbound off-slip Baillieston Junction 8 to the A89 Bargeddie Roundabout, second exit onto A8 all-purpose road eastbound continue A8 eastbound to Carnbroe Road off-slip.
• Return Journey via: A8 all-purpose road eastbound Carnbroe on-slip, A8 all-purpose road eastbound via Eurocentral North roundabout to Chapalhall North Roundabout, third exit to Chapelhall South Roundabout, third exit onto the M8 Westbound on-slip and continue west.

Glasgow (M8) to Eurocentral

• Via M8 eastbound off-slip at Eurocentral Junction.
• Return journey via: M8 westbound on-slip at Eurocentral junction
